Medical physicians (MDs) must be fluent in English in order to fully develop their academic and professional abilities. The general goal of the current research is to get an understanding of vocabulary learning strategies (VLS) used by medical students because vocabulary acquisition is such an important element of language learning. To be more specific, this study aims to (a) investigate the VLS that Croatian medical students use to learn target vocabulary; (b) investigate the relationship between VLS subscales and different types of vocabulary knowledge; and (c) examine differences in mean strategy use between male and female students, as well as between low-, middle-, and high-scoring students. Medical students employ a core inventory of VLS, with a preference for the category of self-initiated vocabulary learning, according to the findings (SI-IVL). Furthermore, formal vocabulary learning (FVL) procedures and controlled-productive vocabulary knowledge have a minor statistically significant link. Female students employ SI-IVL and FVL techniques substantially more than male students, and there are no statistically significant variations in mean VLS use by English language proficiency levels, according to the findings. The findings of this study point to the necessity for teacher training targeted at building specialised abilities for offering explicit VLS education to their pupils.
