Study on Development and Performance Evaluation of a Maize Roaster

The goal of this research was to create a maize roaster using a treadle motor blower and test its performance using a charcoal tray with various air flow duct patterns. Because most developing countries’ economies have left farmers and processors functioning on a small scale, mechanised and electric-powered equipment is only used by a few large-scale processors. By calculating to specification each machine element and using locally sourced materials and diverse manufacturing techniques, a maize roaster with treadle drive blower was built. Using a completely randomise design and Duncan multiple range test, the maize roaster was assessed for performance by recording time of maize roasting on four charcoal trays with varying partners of air flow duct. According to Duncan multiple range test as efficiency, the tray with semicircular pipe shape air flow duct is the most efficient and effective, with a mean roasting time of 499.83 seconds, compared to tray with direct faced shape air flow duct, which has a mean time of 536.75 seconds, tray with double cone shape air flow duct, which has a mean of 553.08 seconds, and tray with single cone shape air flow duct, which has a mean of 694.58 seconds. The machine has proven to be simple to operate and maintain without the need for special training; as a result, the machine’s performance and compactness will make it acceptable and adaptable to small and medium-scale maize operations.
