The present study aims to evaluate the effect on the performance and comfort of users in Indian workspaces of spatial, thermal and lighting parameters. Recently, in India, comfort and efficiency standards in the workspaces have become a primary concern and there is therefore a major shift in the nature of strategies adopted for the same. One of the key concerns for improved outcomes in the efficiency of occupants is to have safe indoor conditions in workspaces. Functional as well as behavioural criteria should meet the indoor environmental variables in workplaces. The needs and opinions of the occupant are the driving factors for achieving successful workspace designs, where their well-being is affected by physical conditions and the job quality of the company performance of their employer is indirectly influenced. The paper presents the findings of an observational analysis of fifteen randomly selected offices with hot and dry climate conditions covering three seasons (winter, summer, rainy) in the city of Nagpur, India. The goal of the paper is to reveal a quantitative and qualitative study of the relationship between five functional parameters such as spatial, furniture, thermal, lighting and acoustics and their behavioural effect on the occupants. It also assesses the subjective views of the user on parameters that contribute to efficiency and comfort and recommends preferential parameters. This will provide designers with perspective when designing workspaces in similar conditions. From an architectural point of view, architects should focus more on this parameter from a user’s comfort, happiness and productivity point of view.
