Preparation, Characterization, Performance of the Galvanized Steel Using Sn as Alloying Element to Promote the Corrosion Resistance

Chemical composition of the hot-dipping galvanized bath can strongly influence on the galvanized
product. So, this book adopted a descriptive research design, including the current state of knowledge
about morphological variations of the hot-dip coating and improving the corrosion resistance of the
galvanized steel by adding different concentrations from a tin (Sn). The effects of Sn addition on the
surface morphology, the composition of coating layers, and the nature of the corrosion products were
investigated using different techniques as field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM),
energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX) and X-Ray diffraction (XRD) techniques, respectively. The
corrosion behavior of steel samples galvanized with zinc and Zn-Sn alloys containing different wt. %
Sn was analyzed by various corrosion tests such as potentiodynamic polarization Tafel lines and
electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) techniques. Salt spray test was employed in order to
analyze the corrosion products. This study has established that the addition of 0.1Sn wt % will
improve the performance of galvanized steel. The study recommended that the molten zinc
galvanizing bath should be containing small amounts of Sn (0.1 wt. %) to improve the corrosion
resistance of hot-dip galvanized steel from 1.02 mmy-1 to 0.03 mmy-1
