Performance of Dowelled Mortise and Tenon for Tropical Timber Species under Shear Load Test

Using the European Yield Models (EYM) technique, an experimental evaluation of single-dowelled mortise and tenon was done. Specimens were axially stressed in shear and dowelled using a 20.6 mm diameter mortise and tenon. The dowels are tested using steel, glass fibre reinforced plastic (GFRP), and wood as test factors. Connections were tested until they failed as the variables were altered to observe the final capacity and various modes of failure. The results show that the shear strength capacity of a single-dowelled mortise and tenon connection made of steel, GFRP, or wood does not immediately mirror the capacity of the dowel. The highest proportional limit, 5% diameter offset, and maximum connection strength are found in steel, wood, and GFRP, whereas the largest dowel yield modes are found in steel, GFRP, and wood. GFRP failure modes were found to be as rigid as steel (mode Im) when compared to wood (mode IIIs).
