Characterization of Surface Acidity of Maredan Clay Catalyst Activated with Sulfuric Acid Using Boehm Titration and Pyridine Adsorption Method


In the areas of ion exchange and heterogeneous catalysis, the acid or base of a solid surface is an interesting component of surface structure. Natural clay is employed as a heterogeneous catalyst because of its acidity, however it doesn’t have enough acidity to be utilised, particularly in the esterification of free fatty acids into biodiesel. The goal of this work was to create a sulfuric acid-activated Maredan clay catalyst and to determine the surface acidity using the Boehm titration and pyridine vapour adsorption methods. Maredan clay was activated using the impregnation technique and varied sulfuric acid concentrations (0.5, 1, 2, and 3 M). The findings demonstrated that the overall acidity of the clay catalyst increased with the addition of sulfuric acid concentration, reaching a maximum yield of 0.6483 mmol/g by using the Boehm titration technique and 1.1137 mmol/g by using the pyridine vapour adsorption method. Using FTIR analysis of the pyridine vapour adsorption spectra, the Lewis acid site of the Maredan clay catalyst activated by sulfuric acid was discovered.
