Analyzing the Milk Consumption and Supply of Ulaanbaatar City

Ulaanbaatar (UB) is Mongolia’s capital and largest city, as well as its fastest expanding. Those who reside in metropolitan regions, notably in UB city, require the largest milk consumption. Domestic liquid milk production is now insufficient to meet the needs of the capital city and other important cities. The purpose of this study is to assess the level of milk supply in UB city by analysing the market equilibrium of liquid milk (estimations were based on cow milk, which has a higher output than milk from other species of five types of animal). Regression studies, including demand and supply analyses, were utilised to estimate functional forms and other relevant statistical-econometrical variables using market theory. Adult equivalent conversion technique cited from methodological guidance and secondary data obtained from the National Statistical Office (2004-2019). The key outcome of the study was that UB’s liquid milk market deficit was significantly higher than the national average, indicating a weak position in terms of liquid milk security (1125.21 t vs. 669.7 t). As a result, promoting domestic liquid milk producers should be a goal in order to enhance market circumstances and address national food security problems. It is clear that more advanced development of intensified dairy farms, as well as support for their activities, will be required to meet future demands.
