Analysis of Piles and Piers Foundation Subjected to Lateral Load in Seismic and Static Condition


In seismic and static situations, a matrix approach is described for determining soil-foundation contact reaction and lateral displacement on piles and piers. The method is based on the soil mass’s deformation compatibility with the foundation structure. The four possible border cases in professional practise are discussed. During an earthquake, the technique considers the compressibility of the stratified soil mass, the foundation’s rigidity, and the horizontal drag forces caused by the soil mass against the foundation. The approach has the advantages of not being iterative, of being simple to programme, and of being easily expanded to various boundary conditions, such as different types of foundations (both shallow and deep) and diverse subsoil conditions. A method for analysing the stability of foundation piles and piers subjected to lateral loading, both static and seismic, is also described. The foundation soil-structure interaction models and Rankine’s theory of earth passive pressure are used in the stability study for stratified soil. Its application is also easier, and it may be solved with a spreadsheet. The method takes into account the pore pressure generated in a fine saturated soil after an earthquake or when a horizontal load is applied quickly. Two instances are solved, one in static state and the other in seismic condition, with the technique detailed step by step.
