An Overview of Pare Rock Mass and Support System Design for Head Race Tunnel
The Upper-Siwalik Sub-Group of the Sub-Himalayan Range demonstrates geographical variation in terms of geotechnical and geological features, making it difficult to anticipate the quality of rock mass or characterise the rock mass. Although difficult, predicting the general behaviour of the rock mass during tunnel excavation is critical. This research uses the classification systems of Rock Quality Designation (RQD), Terzaghi’s Rock Load Theory, and Rock Structure Rating to characterise the rock mass around the Head Race Tunnel (HRT) of the Pare Hydro-Electric Power Project in Arunachal Pradesh, India (RSR), Rock Mass Rating (RMR), and, Rock Mass Quality (Q) scheme. A design for the support system for the HRT of the chosen study area is also attempted. The report provides a comprehensive assessment of the various support systems produced analytically from the aforementioned methodologies and those actually supplied at the HRT. This document will aid other engineers in the design of a rock mass support system based on the outputs of several Rock Mass Classifications for similar rock situations.
