which isn’t free of divergence. Our approach is based on a logically consistent extension of the theory of Gibbs energy that takes polarisation effects into account. Although the model is mathematically robust, we warn against the presumption that physical phenomena can be modelled reliably. On the contrary, simple models lead to findings that are at odds with the experiment and should therefore be viewed as physical paradoxes that deserve the scientific community’s attention. The primary driving force for advances in thermodynamics remains the desire for a logically and physically consistent theory at the same time. The suggested methodology leads to self-consistent results that are mathematically rigorous. In direct comparison with experiments, it now has to prove its viability. That can prove challenging, but only when theory and experiment challenge each other will real progress be possible.
